Perfect Bargain Throw Pillows and The Couch I Almost Hated

1460323139279Our first couch was a hand-me-down, actually a loveseat left over from my husband’s dorm room.  If that isn’t bad enough, it had half a table top under the cushions holding it up just enough that you wouldn’t end up on the floor when you sat on it.  A while after we got married we invested in our first real furniture. Because we lived in a tiny apartment on the third floor of an old home (our bedroom was a turret so it was pretty cool) we couldn’t buy a full sized couch.  We ended up purchasing a love seat and a chair-and-a-half that ended up getting stuck in the doorway so badly that you could walk underneath it because it wasn’t going anywhere.  Ah, memories!

Well fast-forward ten or so years later to when we have a house and the desire to actually own a matching living room set with a real couch.  We decided to use part of our tax return that year to buy grown up furniture (and when I say grown up I mean nothing that comes from Ikea either). With two kids in tow we set out to the furniture store. First bad idea. My husband and I had very different ideas of what our couch should look like. I wanted a very tailored look (yes, I know my sisters are laughing at this comment right now…inside joke), perhaps something with rivets. Rivets are like perfume in a man-cave to the hubs so we bypassed those.  There was one I actually got him to sit on, but when we saw the price we quickly moved on.  He wanted something super comfortable. To me that means super casual which is not my style.  Leave it to us to find a set toward the back of the store in a nice charcoal gray (the color we wanted) and low and behold the salesman said we could have it for half of the ticket price because he “believed we were nice, wholesome people and he could tell we had deep spiritual faith.” Or something like that…I am sure he had a line for everybody, but that was our line.  I was loving the way it felt, but couldn’t get past the throw pillows.  There were no other options and I said to the salesman and hubs that I wasn’t going to spend crazy money on a couch set with pillows I hated.  They gave me that we aren’t feeling ya, but we can tell you’re serious look.

the forbidden ugly pillow that came with our couch

My husband said, “Just turn the pillows around and I know you’re going to like it. You can buy whatever pillows you want.” Oddly, we did just that.  Once I turned around the pillows I loved it.  I still took another half an hour looking at it from every angle – even going to the second floor balcony and looking over to make sure I still liked it.  And of course I told the salesman that we had to go home and think about it (that’s the best bargaining tactic in the book for any negotiable purchase by the way – we got taxes reversed off the price because of that).  However, it was a first when I went back the very next day and ordered the couch – sans kids this time.  I never buy from the first store I go to, but when you are stressed to the max, working multiple jobs with two kids, you start living differently out of the need to buy something now or never buy something.  It worked out in the end, because I instead obsessed over THOUSANDS of pillows.  Here is what I learned after my extensive pillow research.

You can get a pillow with anything on it.  It’s better to get pillow covers and change them out. Why? because you don’t have to settle on just one. You buy them for a few dollars each! You heard me correctly. I wouldn’t steer you toward overspending.  I have expensive taste most of the time, and I can still decorate on a budget.  (Back to the rivets for a second…expensive…but we compromised and I got a tailored chair rollback armless on sale at Target to give the room the look I wanted.)

It’s all about being willing to wait for the right deal. I’ve done the research for you so hopefully you can just find whatever pillow makes you happy.  Most of my cheapest pillow covers came from Amazon.  I have a monogrammed one from Target. And the two all year round ones are from Ross Dress For Less. I think I paid $4.99 each.  I made one of those no-sew pillow covers from Pinterest with carefully selected upholstery fabric on sale.  In the end, scratch that idea because you have to re-no-sew it every couple of days after it inevitably comes undone. I say this as relatively crafty person.  So, just stick with Amazon.  I have included some bargain savvy choices by category that are available at Amazon. If you are in the market for some pillow covers and happen to use my affiliate links this will help us a little as we continue to try and hack away at the remaining several thousand of adoption debt we still have.  I believe at the time of publishing all of the choices were under $15 with most being under $5. Under $5 is where I suggest you stay with the exceptional splurge. This allows you to buy pillows for various seasons or holidays etc. Yes, you will want to keep buying them once you see all the options. If you still want to buy using my link but don’t like the pillows I have here, here is our link to Amazon where you can use to purchase anything. Once you enter Amazon through my link, you’ll still give me the advertising commission and you can log-in to your account as normal.  Bear with me – I don’t normally post items that you can buy on my blog, because I don’t like to “sell” things. However, I do like to share bargains and it just so happens that it can also help our family.

How’s the quality? They aren’t the highest thread count you’ve ever seen. But they are decorations, right not something you sleep on.  However, each one that I have is very sturdy.  Many of the neutral background ones are not linen but have a thread combination that gives that idea.  Also, I had LOADS of trouble with the links so bear with the image quality. I ended up cutting and pasting in the photos and as a result the picture quality is not the same as the image on Amazon.

For the insert, I didn’t buy any. Instead I used the ugly pillows from that came with the couch. That would be the most cost effective option for you.  If you don’t have any then here is the cheapest pillow insert I could find on Amazon at this time. I store my pillow covers ON the pillow and just cover them up with another so I don’t have to go looking for them at the time I want to change them. This is because I lost my Elf pillow cover and couldn’t remember where I had put it.

Get ready for summer: Keep in mind some of these are being shipped from China so if you want them for summer, you need to order now. Sometimes I am surprised and they come quickly, and sometimes it takes a looong time. By reading the info on Amazon you can see the expected delivery date. Some are Prime and then you don’t have to worry so much about timing.

At the time of posting this two pack was only $5.99 plus free shipping. So, while I’m not one to order two of the same, it’s a bargain for someone that would.

It’s really the Elf quote: “The best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear” (pictured above) when you click on the link, when the new window pops up, it will show you the wrong picture, but when  you click in that window the correct pillow does pop up.
